A word about credentials----
When choosing a psychologist or any mental health professional, education, training and experience should always be taken into account. But beyond these facts, look for a "good fit" between you, individually or as couple, and a psychotherapist.
If you haven't thought about it, then I encourage you to consider how important it is in creating a successful therapy experience.
Here are a few questions you may ask yourself in the first phone contact or initial consultation:
- Does this therapist have a style of interacting with me that puts me at ease?
- Does this therapist answer my questions in a way that makes sense to me?
- Do I feel confident that this therapist cares about what is important to me?
- Generally, does this therapist get me?
You will know the answers if you listen to yourself. Trust what you hear to help you make a good choice. And that will be a great first step in moving forward to where you want to go.
